Two robbers gunned down at Tema after daylight robbery

Two robbers were gunned down after stealing over GHS100,000 from a Lebanese and his Ghanaian partner at Tema earlier in the day on Thursday.

The two robbers trailed the victims who had gone to cash the said amount from the Tema Community One branch of the Zenith Bank.

Narrating circumstances under which the robbery occurred, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Paul Kissi Frimpong said luck eluded the two robbers after the Police patrol team pursued them until they were killed in a fire exchange today, Thursday.

“A robbery took place in Tema here. A businessman had gone to Zenith Bank to withdraw over GHS100,000. As they left the bank, these two robbers on a motorbike who chased him, mobilized his vehicle by shooting at the tyres then succeeded in taking his money away.”

“An alarm was raised and the information got to the Police. Our patrol team pursued them and eventually had the two of them killed by an exchange of fire. The money also scattered on the street. People had to scramble for the money so eventually, we had only GHS 25,000 out of the 100,000 cedis,” he said.

Noguchi records positive Covid-19 cases every day – Senior research fellow

A Senior Research Fellow at Ghana’s foremost coronavirus testing centre, Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research, Dr Kofi Bonney, has said the facility records a positive case of COVID-19 every day.“Every day there are positive cases, every day. I mean since we started having positives, there have been positive cases every day.

“In fact, there was a time for two days some people [public] were saying there had not been any positive cases; it’s that for the two days there has not been any update of the [Ghana Health Service] site, but we here know that we have results for each day and each day there are positives,” he said.

Speaking on Joy News’ Upfront on Wednesday, Dr Bonney explained that the daily positive cases do not reflect on the Ghana Health Service’s Covid-19 because the service perhaps has its own considerations on when to update the site with Ghana’s caseload.

“There as some days that you get so many positives that you wonder,” he stressed.

According to him, Noguchi also submits results of tests each day to the Ghana Health Service, however, it seems the GHS decides to wait a while based on criteria he’s not privy to.

“We give them reports every day so, for example, we tended it in today but from Sunday we have been testing and results are being given them all the time.

“So they could have put the results that we had on Friday there, on Saturday there, on Sunday there, on Monday there before Tuesday. But maybe they decided to wait. Because everyday samples goes out there.

“Today, sample results have gone out, but maybe they decide to get some number or maybe away, I don’t know the criteria they use in reporting but every day we send results to Ghana Health Service,” he told host of the programme, Winston Amoah.

He gave the explanation to address concerns that the facility may be to blame for long delays that characterise updates on Ghana’s coronavirus caseloads on the dedicated website.

“Look the lab is testing, we have the capacity to test, but we have gone beyond and we are stretching ourselves to do it so certainly there will be a backlog. We can say that, partly, we are the reason [for delays in releasing the caseload numbers],” he explained why there is a backlog of suspected cases to be tested.

Public concerns have been that there is always a significant jump in the numbers when there have been updates on the number of positive cases.

Ghana’s current Covid-19 situation is 1,154 confirmed cases with 99 recovered and 9 deaths.

Champions League and Europa League finals likely to be played in August

The Champions League final is scheduled to be played in Istanbul and the Europa League showpiece in Gdansk

The Champions League and Europa League look increasingly likely to be played exclusively in August after more talks about the remainder of the 2019-20 season on Wednesday.

Uefa told the 55 associations on Tuesday there was still the possibility of the competitions being played throughout June, July and August.

But BBC Sport understands the latest discussions revolved almost exclusively around a plan to complete the domestic leagues by 31 July, with European competition following after that.

Nothing definitive has been agreed but Uefa is keen to leave all options on the table for as long as possible given the general uncertainty across Europe and in the knowledge there is no guarantee the season will be finished.

However, there is a view that travel restrictions are more likely to have eased in August, which would be necessary for a cross-border competition.

The scenario envisaged would be for the quarter-finals and semi-finals of the respective European competitions to be played as two-legged ties between 11 and 22 August, although these could yet become one-off games.

In the plans now being discussed, there would be some flexibility for domestic fixtures to be played in August, should a July conclusion prove impossible.

The Premier League has nine rounds of fixtures remaining but in Spain and Italy, two countries that have been badly affected, there are still 11 and 12 rounds left respectively – although both have fewer cup games to fit into their schedules.

Uefa hopes the situation will become clearer in the next fortnight but completing the season in this way would cause the least disruption to its qualification competition for the 2020-21 season, which was supposed to start at the end of June but has been delayed indefinitely.

Coronavirus: Kenya quarantine escapees arrested while drinking at bar

Two people who fled a quarantine centre in Kenya have been arrested at a bar where they were found drinking despite social distancing regulations.

They were among dozens of people filmed jumping over a wall of the facility in the capital, Nairobi, drawing public condemnation.

While under arrest they said they had planned the escape because they were not getting tested for the virus.

All bars in Kenya have been ordered to close, to halt the spread of Covid-19.

The pair, who are now awaiting charges, had complained that they couldn’t afford to pay for their confinement out of their own pockets.

This costs between $20 (£16) and $100 a night – depending on the centre.

More than 400 people are under forced quarantine in the country, which lasts for an initial period of 14 days – though this has been extended twice at some centres.

Some are being held because they flouted curfew orders while others have been detained on arrival from abroad.

Many fear they are at greater risk from coronavirus inside, saying poor hygiene is widespread and overcrowding makes social distancing impossible.

As many as 50 people out of 200 escaped from Kenya Medical Training College’s quarantine facility according to local reports, but officials have not confirmed the numbers.

Footage of detainees scaling the wall was shared by Kenya’s biggest newspaper:

Local police boss Muthuri Mwongera told the BBC that he was waiting for the director of public prosecution’s office to charge the two suspects who had been arrested at a bar in the Roysambu area, north of the city.

“A majority of those who escaped had been arrested around this area before being taken to quarantine and so we know we will arrest more with time,” Mr Mwongera said.

Residents living near the bar apparently tipped off the police that it was still open.

COVID-19 App Launch: You’ll suffer extremely – Captain Smart curses Ursula, lying musicians

Captain Smart

Curses have been rained on the Minister of Communications, Ursula Owusu-Ekufulfor supposedly not being candid with expenses on the virtual concert.

The Ministry, as part of the launch of the COVID-19 Tracker App on Monday April 13, held a concert with the motive to provide entertainment to Ghanaians.

A major fallout of that concert has been allegations of musicians pocketing huge sums of money for their performances.

But the Ministry of Communications has been adamant no money was paid to any of the artiste despite a confession by one of them of receiving ‘transportation fee’ after his performance.

“The launch was held and I must thank the musicians who also performed for free to lift up the spirit of those of us in lockdown and educate the public through music as well,” Ursula Owusu noted during a briefing at the Ministry of Information.

Captain Smart has waded into the controversy, chiding the Ablekuma West MP for not being forthright with Ghanaians.

Captain Smart asserted without evidence that all the musicians who graced the stage were paid with least amount being GHC5000.

The Adom FM presenter invoked curses on any person who intends to capitalize on the pandemic to make selfish gains.

“Today, I want to tell you something. I’ve been asked to hold my bomb on this issue, but there’s only one thing I want to tell you. Never try to rich yourselves with coronavirus pandemic. Why is the minister lying to Ghanaians and the artistes also denying receiving the money? God will punish you, and your punishment won’t be mild, you’ll suffer extremely,” he fumed.

Meanwhile, the Director-General of the National Information Technology Agency, Richard Okyere-Fosu has said that the app has recorded huge patronage since its launch.

He told Citi FM on April 17 that over 34,000 downloads have been recorded.

“Currently as of last night [April 16, 2020], we’ve had 34,219 downloads and people are providing us with more information on symptoms of Coronavirus which will be passed on to the Ghana Health Service (GHS) to follow up on”

“I want to use this medium to also appeal to Ghanaians that we need this information so we can assist the Ghana Health Service to get you the help that you need.

Paul Adom-Otchere lied again – Manasseh hits back

Manasseh Azure Awuni

It appears that the host of Good Evening Ghana was factually inaccurate with his attempt to explain the $100,000 bribery allegation he levelled against investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni.

Paul Adom-Otchere on his show last Tuesday indicated that, he only called up Manasseh after the latter’s alleged ‘exclusive’ meeting with Joseph Siaw Agyepong, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Jospong Group of Companies. Paul tried to say that during that alleged meeting, Manasseh attempted to make certain demands from the CEO.

“I called him up and said since you left the meeting there are rumours that you have made certain demands on the man that you met and he [Manasseh] responded that it’s not true. I told him and one of his colleagues at Joy FM that this is what I’m hearing,” he explained.

He added that Manasseh subsequently called him back to ask whether the demands was about $100,000.

“I said to him I don’t know…I heard the $100,000 from Manasseh for the first time,” Adom-Otchere stated.

Responding to Adom-Otchere in a Facebook post, Manasseh said that Paul Adom-Otchere, had called he, the former’s then editor at Joy FM, Elvis Kwashie, that the Zoomlion team wanted to meet with Manasseh.

Manasseh explained: “When I went to that meeting, I found Ransford Tetteh at the reception area. I sat with him and Paul until Robert Coleman called me and we all – Paul Adom-Otchere, Robert Coleman and I – entered the meeting together and came out together.”

“For Paul Adom Otchere to say I requested and met the man alone and that’s where the allegation came from is false. I now understand why Robert Nii Arday Clegg said Paul was evil,” he reiterated.

PAUL HAS LIED AGAIN..

MR. Ransford Tetteh, the former Editor of Daily Graphic, was at the reception of Joseph Siaw Agyepong in 2013 when I entered the meeting with Paul Adom Otchere, Robert Coleman and we met Joseph Siaw Agyepong together.

Ransford Tetteh is not dead. I was investigating GYEEDA in 2013 and when I wrote to Zoomlion for information, it was Paul Adom Otchere, who called my editor, Elvis Kwashie, that the Zoomlion team wanted to meet me.

When I went to that meeting, I found Ransford Tetteh at the reception area. I sat with him and Paul until Robert Coleman called me and we all — Paul Adom Otchere, Robert Coleman and I – entered the meeting together and came out together. When Jospeh Siaw Agyepong gave me his card, I threw it away. I have never saved his number on my phone. I have never called him. And I have never met him since.

For Paul Adom Otchere to say I requested and met the man alone and that’s where the allegation came from is false. I now understand why Robert Nii Arday Clegg said Paul was evil.

I also have Paul Adom Otchere on tape telling me in December 2016 that this allegation in question came up in 2016. It has nothing to do with the 2013 meeting when Paul and Coleman were present. When the Zoomlion issue came up in November 2016 after the NPP press conference, I took up the matter and that’s when he called my colleague to lie about me. In that audio, Paul Adom Otchere admitted taking part in the 2013 meeting.

For emphasis, I have met Joseph Siaw Agyepong only once. And at that meeting, Paul Adom Otchere and Robert Coleman were present. I did not request to meet Joseph Siaw Agyepong alone. As I have stated, Ransford Tetteh of Daily Graphic was sitting at the reception area when we entered. Paul, Coleman and I entered that meeting. He is not dead. Anybody can ask him.

And there’s an audio that shows Paul is a liar.

Frontline police officers ordered to test for COVID-19

The officers are to test for coronavirus

Some frontline police officers who were part of Operation COVID Safety, the security team that enforced order during the lockdown have been directed to test for the novel Coronavirus, the Ghana Police Service has said.

This, according to the police, is to identify police officers who might have come into contact with infected persons while enforcing the lockdown directive imposed on some parts of Greater Accra, Tema, Kasoa and Greater Kumasi.

Superintendent Sheila Kesse Abayie-Buckman, Director of Public Affairs, Ghana Police Service, explained at a press conference on Wednesday that samples of these officers have been taken for testing, and officers who test positive for the Coronavirus will be given the needed treatment as soon as possible.

She said, “The mission is to test as many people as possible and the Police administration has taken the initiative for police officers who performed the specific duty to be tested.

“At the moment, some samples have been taken but due to delays and backlog of samples [we are waiting for results]. However, processes have started.”

Supt. Abayie-Buckman noted that the Ghana Police Service has already put up measures to salvage the situation should any of the officers test positive.

“At any point in time, you will find an officer undertaking an assignment that takes him or her off the road or out of the office. So, should anyone tests positive, it won’t be difficult at all for the officer’s health interests to be taken care of and for other police operations to run,” she said.

Ghana’s Coronavirus case count currently stands at 1,154.

Though the President lifted the partial lockdown on Accra, Kasoa, Kumasi and Tema, public gathering regulations, which include a ban on gatherings remains in place.
