SPORTS: MOST BLACK STARS PLAYERS RETIRE IN PAIN: GYAN REVEALED

Ghana legend Asamoah Gyan has revealed many past players of the national left the international scene unhappy.

The 34-year-old has not had the best of times with the Black Stars in the last year, a situation that saw him call time on his career before rescinding his decision soon after.

“If we look at things, people leave the national team with pain,” Gyan, who play for NorthEast United in the Indian Super League side last season, made the revelation on Adom TV.

“There are a lot of players, I can testify. I don’t want to mention names but for me, I am just there.”

“The people at the top have seen what I have done so if they decide to give me a farewell something, definitely my soul will be happy. Although people appreciate me it will depend on how to do it,” Gyan said on a possible retirement.

“I will do my job till the time I am done. I can decide with my team that I will play a testimonial game. GFA can decide that they will do something for me [play a game or something]. It will depend on them.

“Secondly it will depend on me on how I want to go about it. For now, I am still in the game but as time goes on, ideas will come.

“I haven’t planned [on how I will exit the Black Stars]. I am still playing. It is natural. I could tell you that I will retire in four years but I can call my brother the next day and tell him that I cannot continue playing.

“It depends on how the day goes. Every day, the human body changes so let’s see how it goes but for now, I am okay and playing football.”

Just a month to the Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt last year, Gyan sensationally retired from international duty over displeasure about being stripped of the Ghana captaincy.

He, however, rescinded his decision in time to make the Black Stars squad for the tournament where he played a peripheral role as the West Africans were eliminated in the Round of 16.

The former Sunderland and Udinese man has since not been called up for Black Stars duty.

Celestine Donkor Advises Patience Nyarko To Focus; Says It Is Not A Must For Artistes To Write All Of Their Songs

Celestine Donkor has advised her Sister in Christ, Patience Nyarko to focus on her career following her beef with Joe Mettle.

After Patience accused Joe Mettle of sampling his songs from Methodist and Pentecost church hymns, Celestine has asserted that it is not a must for artistes to write all of their songs.

She said it is okay for artistes to hire others to write songs for them.null

The ‘Agbebolo’ singer also argued it is not wrong for artistes to do a cover version of songs.

“Patience Nyarko is a brilliant singer, she has good messages and Obi Nyanime and W’afom Kwan are great songs and she won a lot of hearts for that. I will tell her to maintain her focus, besides, it is not necessary that as an artiste, you must write your own songs.

“Some artistes are not composers, it is okay that you find someone to write for you or do cover versions. At the end of the day if Joe Mettle won like 1,000 souls with Pentecost or Methodist Hymns, that is hurray,” Celestine Donkor said in a recent interview with Joy News.

WHO to sign confidentiality clause with Madagascar on coronavirus herbal ‘cure’

The World Health Organisation is to sign a confidentiality clause with Madagascar on the formulation of its herbal remedy for coronavirus.

The WHO had for long criticised Madagascar for promoting the herbal remedy and distributing it to African countries.

According to the WHO using the herbal drug without enough scientific evidence of its efficacy can harm people.

Madagascar had said that the remedy called Covid-Organics was developed by the Malagasy Institute of Applied Research (Imra).

Madagascar’s President, Andry Rajoelina has already urged farmers in his country to grow more of the artemisia plant.

He said on Twitter on Wednesday that he had “successful exchange with Dr. Tedros (WHO chief) who commends Madagascar’s efforts in the fight against Covid19.”

Confidentiality clause

Rajoelina also added that “WHO will sign a confidentiality clause on the formulation of the Covid-Organics and will support the clinical observations process in Africa.”

Dr. Tedros also confirmed the call with Rajoelina in a tweet saying “Good call with Andry Rajoelina, President of Madagascar, about the COVID19 situation in his country.

We discussed how to work together on therapeutics research and development. And we agreed that solidarity is key to fighting the pandemic and keeping the world safe.”

West condescending of Africa on herbal remedy

This month President Rajoelina responded to critics of his country’s much touted herbal remedy for coronavirus.

He told French news channel France24 that those doubting the efficacy of the Covid-Organics, a locally produced herbal tonic from Madagascar are condescending of Africa.

“We had 171 cases, of which 105 were cured and the majority of these patients who were cured took only the product Covid-Organics,” Rajoelina said in the interview.

Rajoelina said in French that “If it wasn’t Madagascar, and if it was a European country that had actually discovered this remedy, would there be so much doubt? I don’t think so.”

EC to organise IPAC meeting on upcoming voter registration exercise

The Electoral Commission is expected to meet with political Parties at the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) level on the controversial new voter registration exercise.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) together with other political parties and a cross-section of civil society still stand opposed to the compilation of an entirely new register for the December general elections.

A Senior Fellow at the Institute of Democratic Governance (IDEG), Professor Atsu Aryeh on Thursday questioned the Electoral Commission’s seeming reluctance to yield to the opposition, arguing that the ills of the current register could be cured with a limited voter registration exercise.

The meeting which will be held next week Wednesday is expected to provide stakeholders with an opportunity for frank discussions on the issue.

The Electoral Commission had assured that it will consult stakeholders on its plans for the voter registration exercise.

Copies of the invitation letter available to Citi News show that the meeting will be held in 2 groups of 12 political parties each, with development partners, civil society groups and relevant state institutions in attendance.

The EC has published the precautionary measures it has put in place ahead of the registration exercise.

Among other things, it will be mandatory to wear face masks at the registration centres, people’s temperature will be checked before one is allowed into the registration centre and there will be running water available for handwashing, according to an artwork posted on the Commission’s social media pages.

Queues are to have one-metre gaps between persons lining up to register, the scanners will be sanitised and persons who complete the registration process will also be provided with hand sanitiser before they leave the centre.

Kennedy Agyapong justifies his verbal attacks on Obinim, fake pastors

Kennedy Ohene Agyapong says his mission is to expose fake pastors such as ‘Bishop Daniel Obinim and Pastor Emmanuel Badu Kobi, who are taking advantage of innocent souls of God.

According to the Assin Central legislator, he has no intention of targeting churches. Rather the few charlatans who are hiding behind the pulpits while lavishly swimming in wealth must be exposed.

“Why will I target churches, why will I target pastors…not all pastors are fake. There are genuine ones but there are fake ones like Obinim, like Badu Kobi. I can talk about these two people because I’ve done the investigation, and I have a lot of evidence against them,” he said in a recent interview with Joy News.

He continued: “I’m going to take another video of Obinim to EOCO. He was bragging saying that he’s bought property of 166 rooms in America. There is no house in America that has 166 rooms.”

Mr Agyapong further indicated that EOCO could find Obinim culpable because the latter stated in a video that “he transferred the money…” and this will land him into trouble.

When he was asked why he was targeting Obinim, the MP said the man of God threatened to deal with him for a whole year and he [Agyapong] enjoyed that.

“I like people who are bold like that. So, is it a target?” he quizzed.

He noted that due to the comments from the pastor, he sent his missiles. “These young men were going on radio, television insulting me, but I’m focused. I’ve 1001 evidence against him.”

Bishop Daniel Obinim is still in custody after allegedly failing to meet his bail requirements.

He has been charged with the offence of publication of false news and forgery of documents contrary to sections 208 and 159 respectively of the Criminal and other offences Act, (1960; Act 29).

To this, Kennedy Agyapong said, “After the police, EOCO will come in too. I’ve sent the people there; they’ve investigated the transfers. He puts money into people’s accounts and he transfers to spend; that’s money laundering, it’s also coming up. I am not going to rest.”

He explained that, whilst investigating Obinim who owns and is the Head Pastor of the International God’s Way Church, he realised that the latter had done harm to a lot of innocent people in this country and “I have to let Ghanaians know.”

Rwanda Government launches robots in fight against covid 19

The Government of Rwanda has launched the use of robots in the fight against COVID-19, in a move aimed at reducing contact between medics and patients.

The move is expected to limit the risk of healthcare workers from contracting the virus. The Robots are designed with various advanced features to support doctors and nurses at designated treatment centres, and can also be leveraged into screening sites in the country.

They have the capacity to screen between 50 to 150 people per minute, capture both video and audio data, and notify officers on duty about detected abnormalities for timely response and case management.

HEALTH: Coronavirus: Hydroxychloroquine trial begins in the UK

A trial to see whether two anti-malarial drugs could prevent Covid-19 has begun in Brighton and Oxford.

Chloroquine, hydroxychloroquine or a placebo will be given to more than 40,000 healthcare workers from Europe, Africa, Asia and South America.

All the participants are staff who are in contact with Covid-19 patients.

US President Donald Trump was criticised this week after he said he had been taking hydroxychloroquine, despite warnings it might be unsafe.

The first UK participants in the global trial are being enrolled on Thursday at the Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals and the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford.

They will be given either hydroxychloroquine or a placebo for three months. At sites in Asia, participants will be given chloroquine or a placebo.

These are the first of a planned 25 UK sites, with results expected by the end of the year.

The trial is open to anyone delivering direct care to coronavirus patients in the UK, as long as they have not been diagnosed with Covid-19.

It will test whether the drugs can prevent healthcare workers exposed to the virus from contracting it.

‘Beneficial or harmful’

One of the study’s leaders, Prof Nicholas White at the University of Oxford said: “We really do not know if chloroquine or hydroxychloroquine are beneficial or harmful against Covid-19.”

But, he said, a randomised controlled trial such as this one, where neither the participant nor the researchers know who has been given the drug or a placebo, was the best way to find out.

“A widely available, safe and effective vaccine may be a long way off,” said Prof Martin Llewelyn from Brighton and Sussex Medical School, who is also leading the study.

“If drugs as well-tolerated as chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine could reduce the chances of catching Covid-19, this would be incredibly valuable.”

The drugs can reduce fever and inflammation and are used as both a prevention and a treatment for malaria.

Hydroxychloroquine regulates the body’s immune response and is also used in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and Lupus – an inflammatory disease caused by an overactive immune system.

Lupus charities in the UK and US have raised concerns that demand for the drug associated with coronavirus could threaten the supply for patients who already rely on it.

The drug gained attention after US President Donald Trump suggested it may be beneficial, and this week said he was taking hydroxychloroquine to ward off coronavirus.

The US Food and Drug Administration warned against use of the medication outside hospitals, where the agency has granted temporary authorisation for its use in some cases, or clinical trials.

While the University of Oxford trial is taking place in a controlled clinical environment, the World Health Organization has warned that some individuals were self-medicating and risked causing themselves serious harm.

It has not yet been shown to be safe and effective in the prevention or treatment of coronavirus and can cause dangerous heart arrhythmias.

The trial also involves researchers from the UK, Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia and Italy.

It’s been difficult but I always have a Plan B – Lydia Forson

Actress Lydia Forson says the coronavirus pandemic has been difficult for her but she always had a Plan B, and so she has not suffered immensely as others have.

According to her, what she has realized within this period is that the pandemic forces one to be more creative. She said the COVID-19 period for her is also a relearning period, and before the lockdown was instituted, she, with her team had already sat down and decided what to do.

She told Bernard Avle on his Point of View Show monitored by GhanaWeb that as a creative person, she knew she couldn’t go out there on set to film or to produce any movies, but she used social media to reach out to her millions of followers, stayed in touch with them, and also used the opportunity to introduce her other businesses to them.

“There is always something you can do, the great thing about what I do is I don’t limit myself to only one thing, so even though this is difficult, I am not hit that hard. When we were on lockdown, I told myself I may not be able to go on set, but I am a creative, I am an actress, I entertain people, what can I do within my four corners, so it forces you to go into creative mood,” she told Bernard.

Lydia Forson said it is unfortunate that the system does not allow artistes to make enough money from their creativity even while using social media, and urged stakeholders to put in the structures to enable them monetize their works.
