One of the Ghanaians who has recovered from COVID-19, Frederick Drah, is going through challenges to reintegrate in society.
After sharing his experiences on national TV, Frederick Drah, said his community is refusing to accept his family including his mechanic and barber, who have refused to attend to him.
“The stigma started when I granted an interview on TV. Currently, I’m suffering with that. Because if I could remember, I went to the barbering shop, there was light at the top of the shop but the gentleman just told me that there was no light,” the father of four told Accra-based Starr FM.
He added: “I saw the bulb, the bulb was on, TV was on and he told me there was no light. So, I left knowing that he probably has seen me on the television.”
He continued: “I have an old car I’ve been using and the starter developed a fault. I called my electrician several times to get me another starter, but because he also saw me on TV he decided not to come.”
“Buying from the community hasn’t been easy at all,” he added.
Despite the stigma, Drah said he will not relent on his effort to advocate for people to stay safe. He noted that the situation he is going through is making it difficult for the other 211 recovered patients to come out.
“I just have a message for the entire country that the virus is real. First of all, the stigma aspect of it is that people need education. I am ready to educate my people.”
He added: “Because of this stigma, people who have recovered find it difficult to come and share their story. Those of us who have recovered need to come together to educate the people, but because of the stigma they aren’t. But I am ready to do it. I am ready to go wherever to tell the people that Covid-19 is real and everybody needs to be careful.”
Ghana has recorded 2,074 COVID-19cases with 212 recoveries and 17 deaths.

Veteran highlife musician, Kojo Antwi has revealed why he is extremely cautious on which artist he features on a song.
“I need to like you and study you for a while before accepting to work with you. For instance, with King Promise, I had studied the kind of songs he does and how respectful he was before deciding to jump on his song Bra and it’s the same for Stonebwoy. If I don’t like you, forget about working with me,” he said in an interview with Graphic Showbiz.
According to him, this strategy is to protect his brand which he took years to build.
“It took me a long time to build this brand and I have to protect it the best way I can. There are so many musicians knocking on my door for collaborations but I need to connect with them before the collaboration happens,” he explained.
Kojo Antwi is recently featured on Stonebwoy’s latest album titled “Angloga Junction”.
The decision to lift the ban on all social gatherings which was imposed as part of measures to contain the spread of the coronavirus outbreak has not been taken, President Akufo-Addo has stated.
“We have not taken a decision on when public gathering can resume,” he declared.
Speaking in an address to some 3,000 participants who tuned into the webinar, the President said, Ghana’s borders, which have been closed to prevent the influx of foreigners carrying the disease into the country will remain closed.
He said the extension of the ban was necessary and admonished Ghanaians to comply with it.
According to the president, a lot of information has been gathered on the geographical footprint of the virus, which has influenced the manner in which Ghana has handled the outbreak but relaxing the public gatherings restrictions is undecided at the moment.
The president said the overall picture is that the rate of infection has remained relatively constant.
With a positivity rate of 1.58 percent, “we are not seeing this large explosion that was feared for our country at the beginning and therefore, the ability to manage those who have been affected is much more within our means,” he noted.
The president spoke on the theme: ‘This isn’t the West – How Africa’s informal sector reacts to Covid-19’.

Work has commenced on 49-kilometres of road in Accra with the construction of critical links and overpass, which when completed, would ease traffic congestion and boost socio-economic activities.
The project, valued at GHC149 million, is in two phases and scheduled to be completed in 24 months by Oswal Investment Limited.
Mr Kwasi Amoako-Attah, the Minister of Roads and Highways, who toured some of the project sites to inspect the progress of work, said the project and many others on-going were part of the government’s vision to give a facelift to roads in the country.
“Last year, you all remember President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo says one of his focus this year is to embark on an aggressive road development across Ghana tagging 2020 as ‘the year of roads”. Roads are critical in the development of any country,” the Minister said.
He said the project would develop a new link into Agyrigano Boundary Road from East Legon that would also see the building of a culvert and widening of the road, which would be connected to the Block Factory area.
“When this is done the traffic at the East Legon tunnel will ease significantly because commuters will have options and can drive to the Agyrigano without using the junction.”
Mr Amoako-Atta appealed to the local assemblies to desist from issuing permits that impede road development.
He said the Ministry would work with the local assembly in whose jurisdiction the project was being implemented, in accordance with the law, to ensure demolishing of structures to ease construction work.
He advised the public to be meticulous and ensure they secured permits from the right sources before putting up structures.
Mr Abass Awolu, Director, Department of Urban Roads, said the project would include the building of an overpass at the Block Factory to provide direct access to drivers from the Motorway across Agyrigano Boundary Road, ARS and the University of Professional Studies area.
He said the road network leading to the A and C Shopping Mall, which was in a deplorable state, would be given a facelift as part of the project.
He said in future, the road would be linked to an interchange over the Motorway to connect to the LEKMA and Agyrigano Boundary roads and subsequently to the ARS area.
He said other critical roads that would benefit from the project were Weija-Gbawe, Tema Community 18 and Legon.
Mr Humphrey A. Williams, the Managing Director of Oswal Investment Limited, said the first phase included the building of the culverts and link to Agyrigano, which would be completed in eight months.
He gave the assurance that the project would be completed as scheduled to enable road users to heave a sigh of relief.
The Ghana Immigration Service has confirmed the arrest of 20 Burkina Faso nationals at the Babile inland post near Lawra in the Upper West Region.
They were onboard an O.A branded bus with registration number AS 699- 09 from their home country en route to Sampa, Techiman and Kumasi on Tuesday, April 28, 2020, GIS officials told Dailymailgh.com.
The ECOWAS nationals were, however, intercepted at about 19:00hrs by personnel at the Babile checkpoint, according to the Public Affairs Director of the Upper West Regional Immigration Service, ICO Ibn Yussif Duranah Abdul-Mumin.
“Their migration into Ghana is an economic-related issue. They entered into the country through unapproved routes”, the Public Affairs Director explained.
The suspects comprise 18 males and two females aged between 15 and 28 years. Officials say they will be detained for further action.
The command, however, warned that it will deal ruthlessly with any Ghanaian aiding foreigners into the country.
COVID-19: 221 foreign nationals arrested in Ashanti Region
The Immigration Service appears to be making strides as Ghana tightens security at its territories in the wake of the Coronavirus pandemic.
The Ashanti Regional Security Council, for instance, has also confirmed the arrest of some 221 foreigners who have entered the country without proper documentation.
It warned landlords who harboured such people to be careful since the country had its laws on immigration.
Outlining measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19, Regional Minister Simon Osei-Mensah asked that all health and social distancing protocols ought to be observed strictly.
“All groupings put together for playing cards, draught and football activities are indefinitely suspended and declared illegal under the present circumstances,” the Minister noted in a statement.
The statement reminded the public to wear face masks regularly in areas such as markets, hospitals, shops, restaurants, banks, workplaces and onboard commercial vehicles.
Since the announcement by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to construct 94 districts and regional hospitals, about 53 abandoned, uncompleted health projects have surfaced in public discussions.
The projects – mostly started during the erstwhile NDC administration, have been left unattended to by the Akufo-Addo administration, says the Coalition of NGOs in Health.
Dr Gabriel Bernaku, the chairman of the Coalition told Joy FM that the latest figure forms part of their data collected by their various regional representatives as of April 29, 2020.
“My regional representatives are able to give me at least 53 health facilities either completed and not commissioned or abandoned halfway,” he stated.
Dr. Bernaku stated: “Many of these projects are normally between 60% [and] 100% complete and these are from 2017 to date.”
He added: “We are mindful of two critical issues: …we have to continue and upgrade what has existed to allow communities to use them and then we add on,” he said.
The Chairman of the Coalition of NGOs in Health suggested that President Akufo-Addo should redirect his attention to the uncompleted projects while effective plans are rolled out regarding the president’s current decision to build new district and regional hospitals.
“The Coalition of NGOs in Health is not against government adding the 88 health facilities to the existing ones. We have been very clear from day-one since 2017 that government should add, as stipulated in their manifesto, so if they want to do more, so be it,” Dr Bernaku stressed.
These latest revelations about abandoned health projects, also contradict the position by the health minister, Kwaku Agyeman-Manu, when he told the press on Tuesday that the Akufo-Addo-led administration has “taken time and resources to complete” projects bequeathed to them.
The decision of the Supreme Court on the eligibility and the capacity of Martin Amidu to occupy the position of Special Prosecutor has been adjourned.
The decision, which was expected to be delivered today, Wednesday, April 29, 2020, was moved to the 13th of May by the judges without reasons.
The suit was filed by a former Deputy Attorney General, Dr. Dominic Ayine who contends that Mr. Amidu, being 66 years [at the time the suit was filed in 2018], was too old to hold public office, and as such could not be the Special Prosecutor.
In his writ, Dr. Ayine sought a declaration that per the interpretation of Articles 190(1)(d), 199(1), 199(4), and 295 of the 1992 Constitution, the retirement age of all holders of public offices created pursuant to Article(1)(d), is 60 years, thus Mr. Amidu is not qualified or eligible to be nominated as the Special Prosecutor.
Dr. Dominic Ayine filed the case in February 2018.null
In the course of the suit, the Supreme Court struck out Martin Amidu, as a defendant in the case.
According to the court, Mr Amidu was not a proper party to the case as the position in question was one which falls under Article 88 of the Constitution
The Supreme Court said, per the constitution, the Attorney General is required to represent public officials sued as a result of their office.
Mr Amidu expresses his displeasure qith this course of event saying he would have done a better job in defending himself in the case than the Attorney General or any other lawyer.
