Covid-19: Cut Down Your Ministers – Mahama to Akufo-Addo

Former President John Mahama has urged President Akufo-Addo to cut down the size of his government in order to make adjustment for the economic challenges occasioned by covid-19.

“Our economy has revealed from this Covid stress test that it is still fragile and we need to be prudent in how we manage going forward. We must also be diligent in how we apply the $1 billion facility as the various tranches are released.

“We face significant pressure on our local currency, declining domestic revenues, a slowdown in GDP growth, increase in deficit to GDP of between 8% to 9%, ballooning debt which is projected to hit almost 70% by end year. This scenario requires that we exercise strict prioritization in our borrowing and expenditures and this might be the right time for the President to consider trimming down the bloated size of his government,” Mr Mahama said while donated food Items to some vulnerable households in Ghana.

He also appealed to the government to make judicious use of the money given it by the IMF.

“It is predicted that this pandemic and the disruption of global trade and economic activity will adversely affect the economies of developing countries.  Ghana is no exception. The fast track approval by the IMF of the highly concessional Rapid Credit Facility is therefore timely and very welcome. This will help cushion the economy from the dangers of recession”.

Ghana’s covid-19 case count now stands at 636, up by some 70 more cases.

Coronavirus: Spend IMF’s $1 billion loan diligently – Mahama tells Gov’t

John Mahama has urged government to be diligent in spending the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) $1 billion loan facility granted to Ghana to aid in its fight against COVID-19.

According to him, the IMF’s facility is timely and will help cushion the country’s economy from the dangers of recession.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer said this during a Facebook live stream to announce his latest donations to some households.

“The fast track approval by the IMF of the highly concessional Rapid Credit Facility is therefore timely and very welcome. This will help cushion the economy from the dangers of recession,”Mahama said.

“Our economy has revealed from this COVID-19 stress test that it is still fragile and we need to be prudent in how we manage going forward. We must also be diligent in how we apply the US$1 billion facility as the various tranches are released.”

The loan is to be drawn from the IMF’s Rapid Credit Facility (RCF), a product of the Bretton Woods institution that provides concessionary financial assistance with limited conditionalities to low-income countries (LICs).

In a statement on Monday, the IMF said the money is aimed at helping address Ghana’s “fiscal and balance of payments needs” following the Coronavirus outbreak.

It added that the IMF would continue to monitor Ghana’s situation closely and was also ready to provide policy advice and further support as needed.

Meanwhile, Ghana’s total Coronavirus case count has sharply risen to 636, as of April 14, 2020.

The country has, however, recorded 17 recoveries and eight deaths so far, the Ghana Health Service announced.

Print money to support economy – Economist to Bank of Ghana

Economist, Dr. Lord Mensah, has said the Bank of Ghana can print money to help government’s fight against the COVID-19 due to the pressure on public finance.

Government is mobilising resources to deal with the effect of the COVID-19 on the economy.

Speaking to Citi FM in relation to this, Dr Mensah who also lectures at the University of Ghana Business School (UGBS) said :“Whatever incentive we are going to provide or subsidiary the government intends to provide will boil down to the Central bank diving into its coffers, if there is not enough or contingencies that the country has.

I mean if we don’t have contingency, then in house, there is nothing wrong if we print money to satisfy the immediate needs of the country,” he suggested.

He addded : “The reason why I am saying this is that Ghana was already struggling, liquidity wise. We were having serious problems with liquidity and you could see all the measures that we were putting in place, before the COVID 19 was to ensure that the banks are liquid and we never got there before COVID-19 came in.

“So, if you ask me that the Central Bank can print money for that purpose, it depends on the production capacity of the economy as well,” he added.

Coronavirus Pandemic Not A True Sign Of The End-Time – Pentecost Chairman

According to him, the truest sign of the end-time is when the gospel of Christ has been preached to every nook and cranny of the globe.

Delivering the closing sermon of the Church of Pentecost’s global Easter celebration on Pentecost Television, Apostle Nyamekye indicated that people who call themselves Christians must take up this task and spread the Word of God till the whole world becomes aware of Jesus Christ

“COVID-19 is not the truest sign of the end-time. The truest sign is that the gospel must be preached. And God is looking for certain kind of men, certain kind of women, who will not love their lives even on to death. Who will possess their spheres for the Lord

“Live a victorious life. People who understand the meaning of Jesus Christ for their lives, people who although everything is theirs, for their sake of humanity, they leave everything behind and carry the cross. Men and women whose overriding passion is Jesus Christ. It is not enough to celebrate Christmas and Easter. It’s so we can live a victorious life,” he said.
